Our new front door

Now we have a new front door! As with many projects, this one turned into a more complicated project than we planned. Carl removed the old doors to discover that there was not a header or barely anything holding up the giant window above our door. After he removed the door, the window started to slide down  and Carl quickly held onto the window above him, while I grabbed a 2x4 and cut it to support out window. We only had one 2x4 long enough at the house, so we also used some of the frame from the old door to temporarily support it while he ran and bought more wood to support it and to build a support for underneath the window. Then, one of our friends came over to help Carl hold the window up as I slipped in a wood support underneath the window and then we braced it with some wood on the sides before installing our beautiful new door. Here are the pictures...

 Our favorite little helper!

If you look at the top of the window, you can see how there it a gap from it sliding down

Temporary supports . . Carl was very happy to not be holding the window above his head anymore (and even more glad that the window did not fall and hurt anyone).

A picture with better supports

We thought it looked pretty funny with this big window held up only by 2x4s

All stained and protected with 3 coats of urethane

An inside view with all the trim up around the door and the window. You can also see the new light that Carl installed a few weeks ago.
